Additional Teaching Area for North Glasgow College
The new North Glasgow College is an award winning building designed by the same team that designed the Scottish parliament building. The college has some large open areas with atrium spaces. The college’s success meant they soon had the need for more teaching areas. The new machine tool training room pictured had lots of available headroom above but no way to access the area even if a mezzanine floor was constructed above. Top Level Systems were called in to offer our expert advice. We discovered that the fire corridor which provided access to the machine room area at ground floor also had a high ceiling. This enabled us to construct a fire corridor on the upper level which connected to existing first floor level of the college.
The project therefore involved a 250m² Q-Dek mezzanine floor, and mezzanine platform to form upper corridor. We formed new fire doors at upper level to provide access. The mezzanine floor also required to be one hour fire rated above and below and our scope of works also included all of the lighting & emergency lighting. All this work was carried out during a week’s holiday in October and the Q-Dek mezzanine floor was designed so that all support columns were not interfering with the machines. Top Level Systems provided a cost effective solution showcasing how you can get the most use out of available headroom.
Before: Large open areas with atrium spaces.
After: New area created giving over 200m of additional classroom space.
